Lump in your hand or wrist? What a nerve sheath tumor is and when to get it checked
A small lump in the hand or wrist is easy to ignore. Most are harmless, but some press on a nerve, and those are worth having examined.
What is a nerve sheath tumor?
It grows from the covering around a nerve. Most are non-cancerous and grow slowly. In the hand they often show up as a small, firm lump.
Signs to look for
A lump that slowly gets bigger
Tingling or a shock-like feeling when you press on it
Numbness or pain in a finger or the thumb
Weak grip or trouble with fine tasks like buttoning a shirt
How it is diagnosed
After a clinical examination, an ultrasound or MRI shows the lump and which nerve it sits on. Tissue from the removed lump is then tested to confirm what it is.
Treatment
When a lump causes symptoms or keeps growing, surgery to remove it is the usual treatment. The surgeon works carefully to protect the nerve. I recently removed a lump from a patient's hand, and it showed how much is gained by checking a lump early, while it is still small and easy to separate from the nerve.
Recovery
Most people go home the same day. The hand is protected for a short period, then gentle movement begins. Recovery time depends on the size and location of the lump, so your surgeon will guide you personally.
When to see an orthopedic doctor
Get a lump checked if it is growing, painful, or causes tingling or weakness. Early care keeps treatment simple.
